Level of medical services in Rwanda

There are not many emergency municipal medical response services in Rwanda. Ambulances are available in Kigali through SAMU by calling 912 from any mobile phone, or through King Faisal Hospital at +250(78) 309 003. Outside of Kigali, ambulances are extremely scarce. Medical and dental facilities are limited, and some medicines are in short supply or unavailable; you should carry your own supply of properly labeled medications for your entire safari in Rwanda. In Kigali, King Faisal Hospital is a private facility that offers 24-hour assistance with physicians and nurses on duty in the emergency room. You can find charitable hospitals run by U.S. organizations with some surgical facilities in Kibagora, in southwestern Rwanda, and in Ruhengeri, near the gorilla trekking area, and in Rwinkavu, near the entrance to Akagera National Park.

  • Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, all travelers are requested to present covid-19 results tested within 120 hours of travel. You will also be subjected to another test within 24 hours of arrival during which that time you will be under self-quarantine at a designated accommodation facility.
  • The government banned the use of plastic bags in 2008, therefore you are expected not to enter the city with polythene or else you will attract a fine.
  • Traveling to Rwanda, you need health travel insurance as a must. if one doesn’t have one, you are given 30 days to process it.
  • Rwanda is safe for tourists, there are no registered crime cases towards travelers however there are a few cases of crimes such as pickpocketing, Tourists Security in Rwanda, phone grabbing especially in crowded places, therefore tourists are advised to avoid isolated and overcrowded places.
  • Rwanda has reliably good road networks and buses are with in the designated bus stations in the city to ease movement to various places in the country. There is also a possibility of hiring a private car to take you around however you are better advised to use a registered licensed company.

  • Land borders are open and safe to cross over to the neighboring countries as you long as you have all the necessary documents, in this case tourists are advised to acquire an East African tourist Visa unless you plan to cross to central Africa the Democratic Republic of congo.
  • If found in possession of drugs, illegal trade, human trafficking, the offenders will be punished by Law.
  • It is prohibited to take photographs at border crossing, military camps and government buildings, if found guilty you will be charged by law.
  • Drink driving is illegal and prohibited. It is punishable by a fine and jail time.
  • Homosexuality in Rwanda is not illegal however it’s not openly accepted in public, therefore the LGBTQ are advised to remain discreet as the local population is still conservative and its regarded as a taboo in the society.
