Uganda museum was established in 1902 and is the oldest in East Africa. It is also one of the historical and largest with over 1 million collections of ethnographic objects and archeological artifacts originally from Ugandan people, East African cultures and wildlife.
The museum is located on kira road about 5km from kampala city center and is always open from 09am to 5pm for tourists on a day tour.
In 1908 after the Uganda was officially opened at Fort Lugard museum old Kampala hill, the British colonial agent together with few Ugandans carried out expeditions throughout Uganda that led to discovery and collection of many artifacts. Hence the objects were too much and the museum was shifted to Makerere University and later to its current building.
These are various displays of temporary and permanent exhibitions such as traditional life in Uganda, traditional music instruments, natural history, science and industry, traditional architecture which are open for public viewing.
Visitors will find touring the museum an educative experience. Some of the interesting highlights include the musical instrument that was used by Professor George William Kakoma, a man who composed the national anthem of Uganda. There is also early history of Uganda including fossils of Stone Age humans who lived around 60,000 years BC.
After exploring the inside, you move behind to the gardens to see different traditional thatched houses of various tribes in Uganda. There are facilities like craft shops, restaurants, cafes that make the museum a favorite place to have breakfast, snacks, lunch, and afternoon tea.
