Uganda is regarded as the Pearl of Africa because it has many attractive natural and cultural spots. Among them the world heritage sites are a must visit places.

Uganda has three (3) UNESCO world heritage sites in total. One is a world cultural heritage site and the other two are world natural heritage sites.

As Uganda ranks the most culturally diverse country in Africa with more than 52 indigenous tribes, some who belong to traditional kingdoms such as Buganda, that date back to the 13th century, there are several historic tombs, monuments, Royal parts, food, traditional dance, and royal palaces where you can learn the history and cultural background.

Uganda’s beautiful wildlife and nature is also well conserved including half of the world’s mountain gorillas.

1. Kasubi Royal Tombs
The World cultural heritage site; Kasubi Royal Tombs. This is a burial ground for the four kings who have ruled Buganda kingdom starting from 1835 to 1969. Buganda is the largest traditional kingdom in Uganda dating back to 13th century AD. the Kasubi tombs are sheltered in a traditional thatched hut showcasing the old century traditional culture. it is located on Kasubi hill, 5 km on the outskirts of kampala city. There are other many historical attractions to visit on kampala city tour such as Mengo royal palace, Naggalabi coronation site, Bulange house, Kabaka’s Roundabout.

The 2 world natural heritage sites are Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Rwenzori mountains national park.

2. Bwindi

Bwindi is a habitat to 400 gorillas, which is half of the world’s mountain gorilla population. it is popular to trek in the park to see gorillas in their natural habitat and a gorilla tracking safari can be booked any time of the year. But high season december to February and June to September is most prefered. if you are traveling in rains March to April or October to November, you should prepare to pack rain gears and hiking shoes.

3. Rwenzori mountains national park.

Regarded as the mountains of the moon by Ptolemy 150 AD, Mount Rwenzori is the most beautiful mountain in Africa located in western Uganda. Its snow capped peaks of Margherita standing at 5,109 meters above sea is the 3rd tallest mountain range in Africa. There are 5 types of vegetation, making it a paradise for nature lovers and world class mountaineering.

There are two routes that will take hikers to the summit. the central circuit is the most famous route used by climbers to access the snow peaks on a guided expedition. Even if you are not a peak climber, try to visit Rwenzoris to experience natural beauty. there are several short hiking tails and nature walks that lead through breathtaking scenery such as the valley of 9 glacial lakes. Besides that, Rwenzori is home to diverse species of plants and animals such as three horned chameleon, that are found no where else on the planet.

When you travel to Uganda for a safari, try to visit at least one of the world heritage sites.
